Ohio Star Yellow

Ohio Star Yellow is a variegated Capsicum chinense. Variegation is rare in this species. One of the few commonly known examples, if not the only one, is Ninfadora.

Its yellow fruit have heat in the 50,000 to 60,000 SHU range, based on taste only. The heat is sharp and direct. There is a clear citrus edge with some sweetness and a flavor profile similar to what one would expect from a Scotch bonnet.

This line first appeared in 2022. It showed up unexpectedly. A Ninfadora and KSLSB inadvertent cross may have been involved, but that is speculation. It could just as easily be a natural mutation.

This is a more advanced pepper to grow. Plants stay very small. Many do not get taller than 8 inches. They grow low to the ground with a compact, bushy growth pattern. Branching is dense. The variegated foliage and small size make it a good low-growing ornamental.

The name Ohio Star Yellow comes from the Ohio Star quilt pattern. That pattern has strong ties to Ohio and the military. To be upfront, the name may not be permanent. There is a lot going on with this particular line!

There are several other branches from previous generations still being grown out. We may add them later. All are yellow chinense with variegated foliage. Fingers crossed. We have a sweeter sub-50k SHU type in testing, along with a more resilient plant that retains variegation and has longer, more slender fruit. This has been a small project since 2022, and this is our first time posting it as of January 2026.
