Hangjiao #3 – Solar Flare
This pepper has a story ready to be told! China experimented extensively with the hypothesis that exposure to space radiation would create desirable mutations in seeds. Ten varieties of peppers were a part of this process in the mid 2000s – including the solar flair. The results were not the slam dunk the government was hoping for. Selective breeding of any observed mutations created this pepper – the Hangjiao #3- Solar Flare. The pepper looks like a long orange cayenne pepper and has a heat level just short of a cayenne. A fun pepper that is… out of this world.

I bought these just because of the fun story, but I absolutely adore them and hope that they will be a staple in my garden for years to come. Plants are compact (grown in a window box on my apartment balcony) but extremely productive. Peppers have a delicious fruity flavor and more heat than I expected.
