Mary Washington Asparagus
Mary Washington asparagus, Asparagus officinalis, is an old-school perennial that will stick around for years once established. The seedlings are tiny and wispy. Basically asparagus for ants.
Huge heads up: It takes about three years before you can harvest anything worthwhile. This is going to be a test of patients. Give the plants good drainage. Keep the bed weed-free. It is a dioecious plant… meaning there are separate male and female plants. Some growers cull the female plants in lieu of male ones. The female plants tend to put a lot of energy into fruit production instead of larger spears. Personally, we don’t mess around with that. Female plants still produce edible delicious spears… plus we need seeds!
