Red Jamaican Mushroom
This is an interesting chili, often victim of mistaken identify. Search Google or Bing for scotch bonnet. See anything that looks familiar? Indeed, this pepper shape comes up, even labeled as such by seed retailers. Notice the wide calyx and leaf structure on the plant? These features distinguish the annuum Jamaican Mushroom from a chinense Scotch bonnet. Just like the Scotch bonnet, the Jamaican mushroom is also a widely used pepper in Caribbean cuisine and a key ingredient in jerk seasoning.
Think of the Jamaican Mushroom as “Scotch Bonnet Light” – not quite as hot, but still toasty with a fruity flavor that works in dishes that the Scotch Bonnet would be used in.
150000 – 200000 SHU. This is an estimate. Scoville ratings will change based on growing conditions.
