Black Hungarian Pepper
Black Hungarian is an heirloom pepper that stands out immediately because of its dark fruit. The immature peppers can look almost black, then eventually ripen to a deep maroon-red.
The pods are jalapeno-like in shape and usually grow to around 3 inches long. Heat is moderate, generally somewhere between 2,500 and 7,500 SHU. Flavor is a little richer and smokier than a typical jalapeno, with enough heat to notice without taking over the food.
More Than Just a Pretty Plant
This one also works very well as an ornamental. The dark fruit, purple flowers, and green-purple foliage make it a really attractive pepper plant even before you start picking anything.
Black Hungarian was developed in Hungary from peppers that ultimately trace back to the Americas, like all chile peppers. It is useful fresh in salsa, chopped into dishes, pickled, or cooked anywhere you might normally use a jalapeno but want something a little different.
