Scotch Bonnet Pepper

Scotch Bonnet is a Capsicum chinense with serious heat. Expect somewhere around 100,000 to 350,000 SHU.

The flavor is fruity, sweet, and very Caribbean. This is the real deal for jerk chicken, hot sauce, marinades, and other traditional dishes.

Actual Scotch Bonnet

The pods are small and wrinkled with the classic bonnet shape. This type ripens red.

And yes, mushroom gate is a thing. Jamaican Mushroom peppers get sold as Scotch Bonnets way too often by well intending vendors. They are not the same pepper.  Jamaican mushrooms are annuums, don’t grow multiple fruit per module, and have a wide calyx.

No funny business here. These are actual Scotch Bonnet seeds.

Growing

Plants usually reach around 24 to 36 inches tall. Once the weather gets hot, they can produce very well. Start seeds in a quality seed starting mix (I use Burpees).  The medium should be slightly damp but not soaking wet.  If you can hold it and squeeze drops of water out, it is too wet.  Seeds germinate best in a warn environment.  75-90F is ideal for fast germination. Bright lights and moderate watering while young… final transplant should take place when the threat of frost has passed.  For better success, wait until nighttime temperatures are typically above 55-60F

Like most chinense peppers, they like warmth and a long season.
