Cabai Burung Ungu
The Cabai Burung Ungu, meaning “Purple Bird Pepper,” is a Malaysian heirloom chili (Capsicum frutescens). I like it for its ornamental beauty and culinary uses. The attractive produces an abundance of small, elongated peppers that transition from deep purple to cream and finally to bright red upon full maturity. This is the only rainbow shifting frutescens I’m familiar with. These peppers offer a spicy, flavorful profile, making them suitable for many uses – though one of the more appealing uses is to put fresh pods in stews and soup type dishes for a more complex flavor profile.
TLDR; This is essentially a pretty color changing Malaysian tabasco pepper. Expect around 50K SHU.
