Early Jalapeno

The staple of all garden staples. Even your non-chilihead friends grow jalapenos!

Early Jalapeno is exactly what the name suggests. It is a classic jalapeno type that starts producing sooner than many standard strains, which makes it a very good choice for cooler areas or anyone dealing with a shorter growing season.

Fruit and Heat

The peppers are dark green, thick-walled, and usually around 3 inches long. Most are picked and used green, but they will eventually ripen to red if left on the plant.

Heat usually falls around 4,000 to 6,000 SHU. Fully ripe red pods can be hotter, although the added sweetness at that stage can sometimes make the heat seem a little less sharp. If you want something hotter and thinner, a Serrano is the next logical step. For something larger and generally milder, take a look at an Anaheim.

Uses

These are excellent for salsa, nachos, tacos, poppers, pickling, and just about any recipe that calls for a jalapeno. The thick walls also make them especially good for stuffing.

Plants usually stay fairly compact, around 20 to 24 inches tall. That makes Early Jalapeno a good fit for both garden beds and containers. It is also a nice variety to grow if you want usable peppers earlier in the season instead of waiting forever for the first harvest.  Jalapeno early pepper seeds?  Why not!
